“粑粑”和“㞎㞎”,你分得清吗? Bābā or Bǎbǎ? No Kidding!

Release Date:2015-11-13

今天我们来说点混搭的,虽说有点重口味,但还是要请各位看仔细,也许一不小心你就弄错了。

Let’s look at some reduplicated words today. It might be a little too much, but you should stick around, or you’ll easily get it wrong.

有这么两个词,一个叫粑粑(bābā,一个叫㞎㞎(bǎbǎ。日常生活口语中使用频率特别高,尤其是面对小孩子的时候。

这两个音和型都非常近似的词,恰好分别指向了入口的东西和出口的东西。所以虽然相似,却千万不能弄混了!!!……

The two words, “bābā (粑粑)” and “bǎbǎ (㞎㞎)”, are most frequently used, especially with children, in our daily life.

These two words look and sound so much alike, but they refer to exactly a pair of opposites – one you take “in” and the other you let “out”. So you should never mix them up!

粑粑”+“组成的,表示它是和粮食有关的,表音。所以粑粑是泛指一种中国南方传统食物,通常是把粮食谷物捣碎后做成的饼,圆形为多。四川人也很喜欢吃各种粑粑:玉米粑粑、糯米粑粑、荞麦粑粑……

“bābā (粑粑)” comprises “” and “”. “ (rice)” indicates relevance to food, while “ (bā)” contributes to its sound. Therefore, “bābā” refers to a kind of traditional snack in southern China in general. The popular one is normally a round cake made of crushed cereals or grains. Folks in Sichuan also like this “bābā” in various styles: corn bābā, glutinous rice bābā, buckwheat bābā…

㞎㞎:的部首在汉字中原本是表示和身体有关的事物。也是表音。㞎㞎在四川方言口语中有两个用法:

bǎbǎ (㞎㞎)” has a “” as its radical which originally implies things related to the “body” in Chinese. “ (bā)” is also phonetic. “bǎbǎ (㞎㞎)” has two different usages in Sichuan dialect:

1. 名词㞎㞎bǎbǎ)指的是人畜的粪便。

1. As a noun, “bǎbǎ (㞎㞎)” refers to feces of humans and/or animals.

2. 量词,一堆(粪便)。例如:一㞎()屎。我儿子刚屙了一㞎()㞎㞎(bǎbǎ)。

2. As a quantifier, it means a pile of (feces). E.g. one “()” of shit; or my son just made a “()” of “bǎbǎ (㞎㞎)”.

这下各位明白了吧?千万不要用错字了哦!

更重要的是,四川方言中,这两个词音同调不同。粑粑bābā)一声,㞎㞎bǎbǎ)三声,而㞎用作量词时读作()二声。

So is that all clear? Be cautious to choose between “bābā” and “bǎbǎ”!

More importantly, these two words are in the same sound but different tones in Sichuan dialect. While “bābā (粑粑)” adopts the first (high and level) tone; “bǎbǎ (㞎㞎)” is in the third (falling-rising) tone; the “()” as a quantifier adopts the second (rising) tone.
